Your Dyson vacuum cleaner is your ally in the fight against dust and dirt. Tireless high suction power is available at the touch of a button, taking care of you, your family and your home. But… how do you take care of the Dyson?
If you made of list of all the ‘stuff’ that a Dyson vacuum cleaner handles for you, it would be ugly reading. Your Dyson device with its space-age suction is saving you from the perils of dust (bad), dust mites (worse), pollen, pet dander, mould and bacteria (no comment). What the Dyson sucks up is what doesn’t get into your lungs. If you are overly sensitive to any of these tiny entities, it only takes about one millionth of a gram of them to cause itching, sneezing or coughing.
Dyson to the Rescue!
Sucking up all these allergenic particles and pests is one thing (and not all vacuum cleaners get this right). Making sure that they don’t then leak back into your home is another. Vacuum cleaners need to have highly efficient air filtration and good seals to make sure that allergens stay inside their suction prison. Dyson has the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America accreditation for all of its upright and canister vacuum cleaners. To merit this distinction, Dyson cleaners have to achieve high standards of performance including safe functioning with nearly full bins and risk-free bin emptying.
So How Do You Clean the Cleaner?
Dyson vacuum cleaners need cleaning from time to time. This is quite normal given the amount of dirt and dust they suck up for you. Cleaning involves some extra steps compared with simply emptying the bin of the vacuum cleaner, but is still a simple process. For a canister model like the Dyson DC34 for example:
- Extract the Cyclone unit and bin together from the vacuum cleaner base, using the release button provided as part of the machine.
- Separate the Cyclone from the bin, using the button specifically for this.
- Empty the bin into a rubbish bag. Use a new bag that you can close at the top.
- Place the Cyclone in the rubbish bag, close the top and tap the Cyclone to dislodge dust trapped in it. The dust then falls into the rubbish bag.
- Take the Cyclone out (keep the dust in the bag) and reassemble it with the bin. Put to one side.
- Take the filter out of the Dyson vacuum cleaner. This is the large round disk with water tap symbols printed on it and soft padding on the other side.
- Rinse the filter (but only the filter!) with tap water alone – use no other products or implements.
- Let the filter dry thoroughly. Be patient!
- When dry, replace the filter in its original position in the Dyson vacuum cleaner.
- Replace the Cyclone-bin assembly. And you can start vacuuming again.
In all cases, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for safe handling that stays within warranty conditions!
