You’re going to spend a third of your life in bed – isn't it worth ensuring your new mattress stays in the best condition possible to help you rest well and rise refreshed?

Good mattress care starts from the moment your new mattress arrives – or even before. Whichever brand you choose – Coirfit, Springfit or Tempur, check off each of the points below to guarantee you get the most out of your investment, now and into the future.

• A frame for your mattress! No, not a picture frame, but a robust, purpose-built bed frame (no plywood boards!) underneath that gives your mattress the support it needs, where it needs it. You can find suitable bed bases in the Bedroom Furniture section.
• Protection. Your mattress is your friend – protect it! A top layer mattress protector that is both washable and breathable is ideal. And if you spill your tea in bed, you can just pop your mattress protector into the washing machine. 
• No acrobatics! Your new mattress is designed to give the whole of your body optimal support, but horizontally, not vertically. Don’t jump up and down on your mattress! In general, make sure your body weight is not unduly concentrated in any one place.
• Breathe, breathe in the air. When your new mattress first arrives, leave it unwrapped, well-ventilated and without bed linen for a few hours to let any ‘new product’ odour evaporate. Do this regularly afterwards as well, for instance every few months.
• Mattress rotation. Check the manufacturer instructions about flipping your mattress over from time to time. Turn your mattress around (without flipping it) now and again in any case, to evenly distribute weight, wear and tear. Ask a friend or family to help you, because a good mattress is relatively heavy too.
• Cleaning. Vacuum cleaning is a good idea to keep your mattress dust-free. If the worst happens and you need to clean off spillage, use only a minimum of cold water with mild soap. Never soak your mattress or use dry-cleaning style products.

And that manufacturer’s tag sewn onto your new mattress? Leave it on! Although we hope you’ll never need it, that tag could be important if you want to avail yourself of the warranty that comes with every good quality new mattress.
